Baby your budget

Nearly every parent faces the daunting task of staring down aisle after aisle of pricey baby-proofing gadgets designed to make their home safe for a mobile infant. There are ways to make sure you're getting the most for your baby-proofing buck:

- A 6-foot section of foam pipe insulation can be cut into pieces and easily slipped over table corners and other sharp edges. It'll cost you only a couple of dollars and save big over the bumpers and guards marketed for baby-proofing.

- Instead of spending $12 to $16 each for gadgets that slide a cover over the outlet, those rubber plugs that cost just a few cents each do the trick nicely.
