McCamey to attend pre-draft workout with Houston Rockets

CHAMPAIGN — There’s been a change of plans for University of Illinois guard Demetri McCamey.

McCamey, a junior who submitted his name for the NBA draft, will attend a pre-draft workout Friday with the Houston Rockets instead of making the trip to Portland for a session as originally planned. Illinois junior forward Mike Davis, who also submitted his name for the draft, still will make the trip to Portland for the workout there.

Both McCamey and Davis have until Saturday to pull their names from consideration and retain their final year of college eligibility. Both players have indicated they would only jump to the NBA if they had a guaranteed first-round NBA draft slot.

Illinois and Wisconsin agreed to move games in the 2011 and 2012 season to the first Saturday in December, allowing Illinois to host the state high school football championships. The teams were originally scheduled to play on Thanksgiving weekend during both seasons, causing a conflict with the IHSA state title games.

“We had a chance to play a later game this past season, and I thought there were several advantages to the extended season,” said Illinois coach Ron Zook through a university statement. “We place a high priority on hosting the Illinois state championship games at Memorial Stadium, and this helps us with a bye week later in the season. It also provides a nice opportunity for our players and fans to spend the Thanksgiving weekend with their families.’ ”

Illinois played host to Fresno State on Dec. 5 last season in the Illini’s first regular-season game ever played in December. The decision to move the Illinois-Wisconsin game creates two bye weeks. Illinois also had two bye weeks last season. Illinois hosts Wisconsin in 2011 and plays at Wisconsin in 2012.

The Big Ten also announced homecoming game times. Illinois plays at Penn State on Oct. 9 (11 a.m.) and Michigan State on Oct. 16 (11 a.m.). Illinois hosts Indiana for homecoming on Oct. 23 (11 a.m.).
