Tip of the Week: What you should know about raw milk

What is raw milk? It is unprocessed milk, meaning it has not been pasteurized or homogenized. Pasteurization reduces potentially harmful pathogens in milk, and homogenization creates a more consistent milk.

The federal Food and Drug Administration discourages the consumption of raw milk, warning that it can carry Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria. Laws regulating raw milk sales vary by state.

However, advocates of raw milk say the milk is produced in a more humane environment and supports local dairy farmers. Some say it is healthier than processed milk.

Would You Buy It? Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters

Details: With roasted nuts, whole-grain oats and honey, the nut clusters are marble-sized, crunchy snacks packed in a resealable pouch. There are four varieties: Nut Lovers, Honey Roasted Peanut, Roasted Almond and Roasted Cashew.

Claims: A news release calls the snack “lightly sweet, yet salty.”

Comments: We sampled the Nut Lovers variety, which has cashews, pecans, peanuts and granola. It was crunchy and slightly sweet, but we thought it was very expensive for the small amount in the package. “I’d rather have a granola bar.” “Good, but a serving doesn’t fill me up.” “A handful of nuts would satisfy just as well.”

Would you buy it? No.
