Dianne McDonald: Embrace your inner diva this summer
Poof! In the blink of an eye, summer will be here. Layers of clothes will be shed as the temperature rises, causing many women anxiety. Wearing tank tops, short shorts and bathing suits seems far off on the horizon until you are staring at yourself in the dressing room with that sinking feeling of despair.
We have to stop beating ourselves up about not having the “perfect body” by societal standards. Your body is perfect the way it is.
Wear what makes you comfortable this summer. If more of us don practical duds, the “undress to impress” bathing suit pressure will become less pervasive.
Losing weight and getting in shape is awesome when you are doing it properly and for the right reasons. But going on crash diets or starving yourself to fit into a bikini is dangerous and also foolish, as you are buying into the commercial image of the Barbie doll figure.
Summer also brings out the sun worshippers with the Ban de Soleil tans. Please tell me that people have learned by now that baking in the sun causes skin cancer. Tell me that everyone is using sun protection. You can enjoy all the fun of the beautiful weather while protecting your skin, your body’s largest organ. There are UVA and UVB sunscreen recommendations for a reason. The sun-kissed glow still comes through; we are just trying to avoid melanomas, ladies.
You can experiment with various tan-in-a-can products to get your glow on as well. The self-tan products have come a long way since the streaky orange tans from a decade ago. Trust me, as a former Tony the Tiger look-alike, I know.
Summer should not be the time when we feel extra insecure about our appearance. Embrace your summer girl diva within. Enjoy your sun-protected and comfortable-swimsuit summer.
