Darin St. George: Take it day by day
What kind of day are you having right now? Are you having a day where you woke up, threw on your sneakers and ran "15 out and 15 back" before the sun came up? Or, are you shaking off a food coma from too many complex carbohydrates before bed? Or maybe it's both?
Each day is 14 percent of the week, and if you stack up enough successful days, you will really see a difference in everything fitness-related you do. Eat clean, exercise your tail off and you'll put yourself in the best position to score a "14" at the end of the day. Add those 14s up over the work week and you'll be at 70 percent come the weekend.
Now, here's where it gets tricky. You can throw it all away on the weekend by taking off the exercise and the regimented eating and end up with a C-minus come Monday morning if you don't keep your head on straight.
Would you like to know my suggestion for the weekend? Treat it as if it were days six and seven of the work week. Without question, I see more wheels fall off people's potato carts when the work week ends than at any other time. Seriously, isn't Friday night the traditional "pizza night" across America?
Make it a salad with chicken breast night for the parents even though the kids are gobbling your old standby. Turn Saturday morning into your longest cardio session of the week, doubling what you do on each week day. Then make your kitchen into a fitness factory Sunday afternoon by cooking and planning all your lunches and storing them away in Tupperware for easy deployment.
Remember, each day is a 24-hour brick wall that you have the opportunity to build. Will you use strong brick, mortar and a steady trowel or will you use flimsy excuses and short-sighted thoughts to guide you? The choice is yours and yours alone -- have a great DAY, gang!
