Dream comes true: Mt. Shasta Skatepark to open Oct. 23
It's been a long time coming, but the Mt. Shasta Skate Park will officially open Oct. 23, 2010, at Shastice Park.
The 13,000 square foot state-of-the-art skateboard terrain park was created under the expert hands of Wally Hollyday and his crew.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, the 23rd, live music by The Lottery, Stereotype, RS2 Solid Gold, Work, and Piles -- with sound by Pegasus Sound Production -- will fill the park during a grand opening presented by the Mt. Shasta Skatepark Project and Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District.
Wood fire pizza will be available along with free soda and drinks. A raffle will be held. Sportsmen's Den and Shasta Base Camp will have tables set up, as will the Friends of the Mt. Shasta Skatepark.
"Absolutely elated," is how project leader Yvonne Malee described her feelings about the skatepark and its opening. A project participant and one of its driving forces since the early 2000s, Malee said "perfect timing" was involved in numerous details coming together for the park's opening.
Organizers say the project took a big step forward when Chad Lancour, a skater and Midwest/Bay Area transplant, moved to town and joined the group in 2006, contributing organizational and fund-raising skills that helped push the park to fruition.
Fund-raising was done at the grassroots level and included contributions from major private foundations such as The McConnell Foundation, Ford Family Foundation, Shasta Regional Community Foundation, Ben B. Cheney Foundation, and the Tony Hawk Foundation.
The Skatepark Project is giving community members and businesses a final opportunity to contribute to the project and have their name engraved in stone near the entrance.
Contributions for the name recognition begin at a minimum of $250 for a Bronze membership and range all the way to $10,000 and over for a Platinum membership. All contributions are tax deductible.
