Mike Shaw leaning toward Illinois, analysts say; decision to come Thursday

With Illinois basketball recruiting target Mike Shaw set to announce his college decision Thursday afternoon, Chicago-based recruiting analyst Joe Henricksen said indications point toward Illinois.

News reports said the same thing, but crazier things have happened with recruiting in Chicago, so there's a believe-it-when-I-hear-it attitude.

"From what I know and gather, I thought it would be Illinois,'' Henricksen said. "The more I hear, I believe it will be Illinois. I would be surprised if it wouldn't be Illinois. But that's the way of the landscape in recruiting. You don't know until everything is done.''

Using an unnamed source, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Shaw, a Chicago De La Salle High School senior, would commit to Illinois. The Chicago Tribune also used an unnamed source and said Shaw was likely headed to Illinois. Shaw made an official visit to Illinois over the weekend.

Nothing is really official until signing a letter of intent. That's can't be done until Nov. 10.

Shaw is a 6-foot-8 power forward ranked No. 58 by Rivals. He will choose between Illinois, Marquette and DePaul and bring a tough rebounder and physical presence.

"He would be one of those big strong athletes like the guys at Michigan State,'' Henricksen said. "He would probably be the best rebounder at Illinois. The two guys that would be the most physical would be (Meyers) Leonard and Shaw.''

Meanwhile, a report from the Lafayette (Ind.) Journal and Courier said Rock Island senior Chasson Randle is leaning toward Stanford. Randle also has Illinois and Purdue as his finalists.

Like Shaw, everyone just waits for the final word from Randle.
