Campfire recipe: Camp Baked Apples

Jim Hillibish

It’s definitely camping season. You can almost smell the campfire.

Camping cuisine must be simple but hearty and fortifying. For a surprise, offer your campers a dessert of baked apples stuffed with raisins. This is a make-ahead-of-time recipe, and it’s as simple as it gets over the fire. Wrap each apple tightly with aluminum foil.

Camp Baked Apples

  • 1⁄2 cup sultana raisins
  • 1⁄3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

At home:

Core but do not peel the apples. Mix raisins, sugar and cinnamon, and compact mixture into the core hole.

At camp:

Make a campfire and allow it to burn down to red embers. Place foil-wrapped apples directly on the embers, core holes parallel to the fire. Roast for 10 minutes.
