Critics Cupboard: Orville Redenbacher’s Pop Up Bowl

Jim Hillibish

Jennifer Mastroianni: Imagine making a bag of microwave popcorn, but instead of the opening seam at the top of the bag, like normal, you turn the bag on its side and open the horizontal seam.

That’s pretty much the idea behind this “Pop-up Bowl,” three per box. It’s not really a bowl. It’s a paper popcorn bag with a side opening. For more money. You want a bowl for your popcorn? Here’s a tip. Get one out of the cupboard.

Saimi Bergmann: I don’t have an engineering degree and I don’t have Herculean strength, so I had a spot of trouble getting this bag/box of popcorn open. I wound up stabbing the cellophane with a knife and tearing it.

The major benefit here is that you don’t have to choose between dirtying a bowl or getting grease on your lap. This package does one thing well — it serves as a tidy container for microwaved popcorn.

Is it worth the extra money to get this instead of the paper bags? Your call.
