Mount Shasta gearing up for July 4 celebration
It was a long, cold winter, and now that things are finally heating up, it’s time to think about the Fourth of July!
The city of Mount Shasta is preparing for the annual city-wide celebration of our nation’s birthday, featuring a three-day street festival, scores of live entertainment, the 32nd annual July 4 Walk/Run, fireworks over Lake Siskiyou and more.
This year’s festivities will kick off on Saturday, July 2, when the street festival opens at 10 a.m. Downtown streets will be filled with sidewalk sales, food vendors and a beer garden while circus entertainers rove about.
Live music by several local and out-of-town bands, including The Dastardly Duo Jack Taforo and Trevor Sellman, Last Call, The Nonessentials, Blue Relish, Terese Condit Jazz Trio, Sundown Poachers Wild Blues Yonder and Chick Music will last until 5 p.m.
A bevy of quirky performers, including acrobats, jugglers, clowns, contortionists, belly dancers, martial artists and roller derby girls will provide entertainment for young and old alike.
Be sure to save some energy for Sunday, July 3, when the street festival opens again at 8 a.m. Live music at the Castle Street stage will kick off at 10 a.m. and won’t stop until 5 p.m. that evening.
This year, Thunder Mountain Motor Sports will sponsor a street dance directly in front of The Goat Tavern at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Mt. Shasta Boulevard, beginning at 5 p.m.
“Elvis,” Chick Music and Rockit will provide music at the street dance, which will last until 10 p.m.
The dance is a benefit for Mount Shasta’s Corben Brooks, who suffered a spinal cord injury while playing high school football in August, 2008. Corben’s goal is to one day get out of his wheelchair, and has made great strides in the past three years.
Money raised at the street dance will help fund Corben’s trips to India, where he is undergoing stem cell treatments not yet available in the United States.
July 4 will dawn bright and early with the 32nd annual Mt. Shasta Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by the Mountain Runners. The run begins at 8:30 a.m., sharp.
Dubbed the “largest small town run/walk in America,” each year the event gets bigger and better.
With entertainers and an array of food along the route, participants will also be treated to entertainment roving through the crowds.
All those who enter the race will be eligible to win an array of raffle prizes, including a 2011 Kia Soul. You must be present to win.
Proceeds from the event go toward beautifying the city of Mount Shasta.
The annual Fourth of July parade follows the downtown excitement. This year’s theme is “Bears, bears, bears,” and will begin at the south end of town at noon.
Floats, vintage cars, dance troupes, non-profits, businesses, fire engines, police cars and more will take to the streets, throwing out candy and putting smiles on faces.
That evening, find a comfortable spot to enjoy the traditional fireworks show over Lake Siskiyou. Grab a spot on the green at Mount Shasta Resort’s customer appreciation day, or float on the lake and enjoy the show up close and personal.
The Resort donates all of the proceeds from their Customer Appreciation Day to the Fireworks Committee to pay for the fireworks, which run about $20,000.
Tickets to relax on the green are $2; children under five are free. The gate opens at 5 p.m. No coolers, fireworks or pets are allowed.
