Crosswalk safety urged as Mount Shasta fills up

With the influx of hundreds of tourists for Mount Shasta’s big July 4 celebration, police are urging drivers to be cautious, particularly when approaching crosswalks.

Chief Parish Cross said his department is receiving daily complaints about drivers not stopping for pedestrians attempting to cross downtown streets.

“Drivers can and will be cited for the violation,” Cross said. “All drivers should be cautious and keep an eye out.”

Cross also urges pedestrians to use crosswalks whenever possible, and though it’s a driver’s responsibility to stop, sometimes they simply don’t see pedestrians.

“It’s best to make eye contact with drivers from both directions to be sure they see you before stepping into the roadway,” he said.
