Morning Jolt: Last 12 months the hottest ever

In the news: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Monday that the U.S. experienced the hottest 12-month period (ending in June) in the history of its record keeping. The numbers don’t even take into consideration last week’s record heat wave, but during the last half of June, all-time high temperatures were recorded in 170 cities. The National Climatic Data Center said that in the past 30 days, more than 4,500 new record highs have been set.

Happening today: The Major League Baseball All-Star Game takes place tonight. The annual game is at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Fox. Justin Verlander of Detroit will start for the American League, and San Francisco's Matt Cain will start for the National League.

Gas update: reports that the lowest gas prices are in Greenville, S.C., Spartanburg, S.C., Jackson, Miss., Rio Grande Valley, Texas, and Chattanooga, Tenn.
