Penn State's Ryan Nowicki to transfer to Illinois
CHAMPAIGN -- Penn State offensive lineman Ryan Nowicki told Illinois coaches Thursday he would transfer to the Illini.
A recruiting insider confirmed the news after the Arizona Republic first reported Nowicki chose the Illini over Arizona State and Washington. The 6-foot-5, 280-pounder is an Arizona native who has four years of eligibility remaining. Because of NCAA sanctions on Penn State after the child sex abuse scandal, Nowicki is eligible to play immediately.
Illinois can't comment until paperwork is completed.
The Illini riled up Penn State fans by sending eight coaches to State College, Pa., last week in an effort to recruit Nittany Lions players. Nowicki is the eighth player to leave Penn State, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Gene Honda, the public address announcer for the Chicago Blackhawks and White Sox, will serve in the same capacity with Illinois football this fall. He will have three conflicts among seven home games.
