5 Things to Do This Weekend (March 1-3)

1. Saturday is Dr. Seuss Day and Read Across America Day. In honor of one of our most beloved writers, head to the library or bookstore this weekend and pick out some books to read, including, of course, Dr. Seuss books. Many libraries across the U.S. will be holding special events, so check the newspaper for listings.

2. The big movie opening this week is “Jack the Giant Slayer.” This take on the Jack and the beanstalk story directed by Bryan Singer is described by the director as family friendly.

3. Friday is World Day of Prayer, a day when women gather to pray. This year’s theme is "I Was a Stranger and You Welcomed Me" and focuses on migration. Check the newspaper for listings on any public services, or head to the official website,

4. Sunday kicks off Celebrate Your Name Week. There are plenty of fun things for the family to do with this day and week: some suggestions are to research the meaning of your first and last names, play word games with your names (e.g., try to spell another word or words using the letters in your name) and whatever you can think of.

5. And don’t forget about sports! This weekend will see plenty of action, with college basketball, the NBA, NHL and NASCAR in full swing, and MLB spring training is ramping up. Check your TV guide for game times, or head online to your favorite sports site.
