Custom student-designed awards will be bestowed upon the first, second and third place men and women finishers in the May 18 Weed Run for Schools.

The second annual Weed Run For Schools will take place Saturday, May 18 in Weed.

There are three race opportunities offered again this year, a Half Marathon Run, a 10K Run, and a 5K Run/Walk.

The Half Marathon will begin at 8 a.m., and the 5K and 10K will begin at 9 a.m.

The half marathon will begin north of Weed in Shasta Valley. Runners will pass the Edgewood store built in 1888, follow the Old Stagecoach Trail past Robbers Rock and the Weed Golf Course, continue toward Weed, pass under the Weed Arch through downtown, and finish at the Weed High School Campus.

Both the 5K and 10K courses start and wind through the scenic cross country trail surrounding Weed High School, where views of Mt. Shasta abound and spring fed creeks meander throughout the forested landscape. 10K runners will pass through historic downtown Weed on their way to the finish.

You may pre-register for the race online by May 13 at or pick up a registration form at Tri Counties Bank in Weed, Mount Shasta, or Yreka, The Weed Store, and other local businesses.

There will also be registration and packet pickup on Friday, May 17 at the Weed High School campus from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Day of race registration will be held from 7 a.m. to 7:45 am.

Preregistration (before May 13) entry fees are $25 for the 5K, $30 for the 10K, and $50 s the half marathon. After May 13, including race day, the fees are $30, $40 and $55 respectively. All entries received (postmarked) by May 13 are guaranteed a shirt on race day. After May 13, shirts will be available while supplies last.

The awards ceremonies will be held on the WHS football field immediately after each race ends. There will be student custom designed awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers, both male and female, in each of the three races, for a total of 18 custom designed awards. The top three male and female runners in each age group will also receive medals. All half-marathon participants will receive a medal.

Proceeds will benefit the Advanced English I and II classes at Weed High School to be used for college tours and other trips, in the effort to help students become college and career ready.
