Mount Shasta Recreation offers plethora of summer programs

The Mount Shasta Recreation District will open registration for its summer daycamp program on Wednesday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mount Shasta City Park, recreation office.

Parents may also register their kids on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Camps offered include:

• Headwaters Adventure Camp – Begins June 24 at Mount Shasta City Park. Five, one-week sessions for ages 5-12. Themes include: “Around the World & Back Again,” June 24-28; “Weird Science,” July 8-12; “X Games & More,” July 15-19; “Where the Wild Things Are,” July 22-26; and “HydroMania,” July 29 to Aug. 2.

Camp runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Campers should bring a lunch. Camp fees are $75 per week; $10 discount for each additional child. Additional charges for the Lake Siskiyou swim party on July 26 and Waterworks Park on Aug. 2. All activities are age-group appropriate.

• Siskiyou Jr. Golf – Final registration closes Friday, June 7. Summer-long coed instructional program for ages 8-18. Learn the game, improve skills.

Stroke clinics held Tuesday and Thursday, June 11 and 27 at Mount Shasta Resort and Lake Shastina Golf Resort.

Skills Day is Monday, July 1. Weekly age division tournaments are July 11 to Aug. 3 at county-wide courses. Fee is $65; family discount offered. Clubs can be provided if needed.

• Junior Giants Baseball – Begins July 1. Eight-week coed recreational baseball program, developed and sanctioned by the SF Giants. Teaches fundamentals and baseball rules in a team format with emphasis on good sportsmanship and positive character development. Weekday, afternoon game schedule, no practices.

Games held at Mount Shasta Youth Sports Park on Lake Street. Age groups: 5–7, 8-10, 11-13. No fee. Hats and shirts provided. Players may qualify to attend Junior Giants Day game at AT&T Park on Aug. 11. Register online only at

• YMCA Youth Baseball Camp – Sponsored by Yreka Family YMCA. Instructional co-ed camp at Mount Shasta Little League Field, June 10–13 from 9 a.m. to noon. Open to 3rd-8th grades. Camp director is COS Coach Steve Neel, assisted by local coaches.

Registration through the “Y” is open through June 3. Fee is $45 if registered by June 3; $65 after June 3. Participants receive camp t-shirt. YMCA registration forms available at the Recreation office or call 842-9622.

• YMCA Youth Basketball Camp – Sponsored by Yreka Family YMCA. Instructional co-ed camp for 3rd-8th grades at Sisson School gym, June 17 to 21 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Camp director is coach Kale Riccomini, assisted by local coaches.

Registration through the “Y” is open through June 7. Fee is $60 if registered by June 7; $75 after June 7. Participants receive camp t-shirt. YMCA registration forms are available at the Recreation office or call 842-9622.

• Martial Arts Mini Camp – In partnership with the Mount Shasta Martial Arts Program, kids and teens are invited to attend a three-day mini-camp at the Mount Shasta Martial Arts facility, July 1-3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Introduction to the basics of Taekwondo, Judo and Hapkido while focusing on the importance of self-discipline, self-training, self-respect, self-defense and self-confidence. Fee is $65. To reserve a space call Chuck Buhs at 859-2024 or email

• Music Madness – Led by voice and music instructor Teri Mihalevich. A continuation of the program currently offered to K-2nd grades at Mount Shasta Elementary. Session held at Mount Shasta City Park beginning mid-June, culminating in a performance at the city park late July.

Kindergarten attends on Mondays, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; 1st-2nd grade attends on Thursday, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Fee is $35 each four-week session. To reserve a space call 926-3354.

• Summer Performing Arts Camp – Directed by Wendy James for ages 8-14. Learn acting, dancing and singing skills while working with character development, costuming and set design. The three-week camp runs Monday through Thursday, July 15 to Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mount Shasta Elementary, culminating in three performances of “Pirates,” Aug. 4-6.

Fee is $75 per week; or $225 for the full camp plus performances. Two camp scholarships offered through participation in the “Why I Want to Be a Pirate” writing contest. Entries due by June 10. Register at the Recreation office.

• Ballroom Dance Camp – Professional ballroom dancers Rick and Peggy Nixon invite aspiring dancers ages 6-18 to a one-week dance camp at Mount Shasta City Park, Dudes & Daisies building, June 10-14 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Dancers will be instructed in swing, samba, salsa, foxtrot, waltz and more. Fee is $50. To reserve a space call 415-215-2652.

• Safe Dating 101 – Self defense and martial arts instructor Chuck Buhs will facilitate a four-hour workshop at Mount Shasta City Park, lower lodge on Saturday, July 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for girls ages 11 and up, and their moms.

Topics include self-confidence during social or dating situations with an emphasis on using awareness, assessment and action to be safe and remain safe. Class fee is $20, plus $5 for moms. To reserve a space call 859-2024.

• Swim lesson schedules for the Weed and Dunsmuir pools can be picked up at the Mount Shasta Recreation office.

Weed sign-up night is June 4 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; weekday sign-ups begin June 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. Call the Weed Recreation office at 938-4685.

Dunsmuir sign-ups begin June 10. Call the Dunsmuir Recreation office at 235-4740.

The Weed and Dunsmuir community pools open for the summer season on June 17. Swim for free on opening day. After opening day call the Dunsmuir pool at 235-2339 or the Weed pool at 938-4701.
