A bicyclist traveling on Highway 89 south of McCloud died Saturday afternoon, June 15, after being struck by a 2002 Dodge pickup.

William Arnold West, age 49 of Palo Cedro, was riding a Specialized 30-speed bicycle and towing a small trailer in the far right side of the northbound lane, toward Mount Shasta, when the accident occurred, said Sgt. Ryan Ham of the Mount Shasta California Highway Patrol office.

West was struck by motorist Edward Montgomery Anderson, age 76 of Congress, Ariz., at about 12:40 p.m., according to a CHP press release.

Anderson was also headed toward Mount Shasta driving behind an older Jeep-type vehicle, which swerved to the left into the southbound lane to avoid the bicyclist, the CHP said. According to the report, Anderson said he then saw the bicyclist and attempted to swerve to avoid him but was unable to avoid a collision.

West was thrown from the bike onto the gravel shoulder, Ham said.

Upon CHP arrival, emergency personnel were administering CPR, Ham said. West was taken to Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta and died from his injuries.

The accident is still under investigation, Ham said.
