The FBI and the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department are investigating allegations of misconduct involving the Tulelake Police Department.

Few details have been released regarding the investigation, though Sheriff Jon Lopey said his department is working jointly with the FBI because “there are allegations involving possible state and federal statute violations” and predicted a resolution could be reached within 30 days.

Lopey said the allegations were reported to the Sheriff’s office by another agency and stem from an arrest incident on Feb. 3. He reminded the public that the investigation is ongoing and said no charges have been filed at the local or federal level.

On Wednesday, June 26, Lopey met with Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus, FBI agents and Tulelake city officials to discuss the allegations, according to Allison Giannini, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department. That same day, search warrants were served at two locations by the Sheriff’s Department with assistance of the FBI in Tulelake.

“Search warrants and investigative efforts have been focused on determining the truth of the matter and to refute or substantiate the allegations,” said Lopey. “It is difficult to investigate allegations against any law enforcement member or agency but it is encouraging that the investigation is in its final stages and Tulelake officials have been very cooperative, which helped facilitate the search warrant operation and should help expedite the resolution of this case.”

The Sheriff’s Department offered to provide supplemental law enforcement services to the City of Tulelake until the case is resolved, Lopey said, and this is being considered by Tulelake officials. Deputies have been deployed to augment resources of the California Highway Patrol, according to a press release.

“The case findings must be thorough reviewed by local and federal officials prior to any final outcome being finalized,” Lopey said. “We know this is a difficult situation for all concerned and we plan to resolve the case as soon as practical. The cooperation between the involved investigating agencies and City of Tulelake has been extraordinary and has helped to resolve important issues in the case thus far.”
