California Department of Transportation District 2 has scheduled a ceremony to honor 14 of its fallen workers on Tuesday, April 22. It will pay special tribute to Shawn Baker and Robert Jones, employees who were fatally injured in April 2013 while performing a rock scaling operation near Happy Camp.

The event, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the Mount Shasta Maintenance Station at 1625 Mott Road, is being held in conjunction with National Work Zone Safety Week. Designated parking will be available.

“These men, as well as the 12 others we will honor on the 22nd, lost their lives improving safety for motorists in Northern California,” said District 2 Director John Bulinski. “It is a stark reminder of the hazards our state highway workers face every day and reinforces the fact that safety is and must remain our number one priority.”

Since 1921, Caltrans reports that 182 of its employees have lost their lives on the job. Caltrans reminds “the traveling public to please move over if safe or slow down when they see Caltrans vehicles flashing warning lights along the side of the highways. It is the law.”
