Paul Merrill, age 87 of Belmont, was reported missing by his family when he failed to return from a trip to McCloud.

A California Highway Patrol news release described Merrill as a widower who suffers from depression and does not have a cell phone. The CHP said it is unknown if he has his medication.

Merrill was last seen driving a silver 1956 Mercedes 190SL, according to the release. He is described as a white male, 5 feet 11 inches, with gray hair and clean shaved. He was last seen wearing a white long-sleeve shirt with embroidered flowers, tan slacks and brown shoes.

A missing persons investigation is being conducted by Belmont Police Department and a Silver Alert has been issued by the California Highway Patrol.

A possible siting put Merrill in the area of Fowlers Campground and Cattle Camp off Highway 89 near McCloud.

Anyone with information regarding Merrill is asked to call 911.

The CHP serves as the statewide coordinator for the state’s Silver Alert program. The CHP works with the local law enforcement agency to determine whether a subject meets the following criteria established by law:

• Is 65 years or older.

• Is missing under unexplained or suspicious circumstances.

• Is in danger.

• There is information available that if released would lead to a safe recovery.

Upon activation of a Silver Alert, the CHP will assist the investigating law enforcement agency by issuing a be-on-the-lookout alert, an Emergency Digital Information Service Message, and/or an electronic flyer.
