'Editor of the Year' nod goes to Kinkade
Since growing up reading the Mount Shasta Herald with her grandpa and going on to work as a reporter for the publication for a decade, Mount Shasta Area Newspapers and Siskiyou Daily News Editor Skye Kinkade recently received the Best of Gatehouse 2018 Editor of the Year in the Class D category.
The Class D category consists of Gatehouse Media’s newspapers that publish three or fewer times per week; there are more than 100 papers in the Class D group from across the United States.
From 2008 to 2014, Kinkade worked as a reporter at the Mt. Shasta Area Newspapers and then continued as a stringer until she was hired as editor of the Siskiyou Daily News, a position she took over in July of 2018.
Kinkade credits her mentor, former Mount Shasta Herald editor Steve Gerace, with teaching her everything she knows about the newspaper industry, specifically the newspaper industry in a small area like Siskiyou County.
“When he hired me, I had absolutely no experience,” said Kinkade. “He had faith in me. He encouraged me in my career and urged me to apply for the position as editor of the Siskiyou Daily News. I will be forever grateful for the lessons he instilled in me, and I hope to emulate Steve in years to come as editor of the Mt. Shasta Area Newspapers,” a role Gerace held for more than 30 years.
When Gatehouse Media Northern California Regional General Manager Amy Lanier recommended Kinkade for the Editor of the Year award, she stated, “When I hired Skye as Editor of the Siskiyou Daily News in July of 2018, she immediately demonstrated leadership, ambition and the desire to produce a product that the community would really engage with. She is efficient, determined and has an excellent work ethic. She distinguishes herself by her attention to detail, having a great attitude, and producing outstanding work.”
The Editor of the Year award is not the first honor Kinkade has received in her work as a journalist. For two consecutive years – 2011 and 2012 – she was selected to attend the Suburban Newspaper Association’s Symposium in Chicago, Ill. Only 20 journalists from across the country are selected for the opportunity each year.
Kinkade feels she has found her ideal career in her work as an editor.
