With spring comes so do the chores of cleaning up.

In McCloud, the services district offers free green waste disposal 24/7 for its residents. The district office wants to make sure that people know about and take advantage of this extra service to help lower the refuse costs.

“We are finding that a lot of people are putting their green waste in their trash cans and it is driving our costs up at the Black Butte Transfer Station in Mt Shasta with the excess grass clipping and leaves,” said MCSD Public Works Superintendent Amos McAbier. “Last year there were a lot of apples and the weight alone can break the mechanical arm of the side loader. It can also break the trash cans.”

Refuse truck driver Jerry Glynn said that this time of year he makes more trips over the hill with heavier loads because of the extra green waste.

“Have a neighbor help you haul your green waste to our green waste disposal site if you cannot do it. It is at the Wastewater Facility across from the golf course on Squaw Valley Road,” Glynn said.

The green waste disposal site is open 24 hours a day and is under surveillance cameras for people’s safety.

Another service that the MCSD offers is disposal of small household AA, alkaline, lithium or rechargeable batterie at the district office.
