Adults, children invted to audition for 'Sound of Music' production
The Cascade Conservatory and Playhouse will soon hold auditions for their first full-length musical “The Sound of Music.”
Adults and children will be cast for the production and a kids audition workshop will be held for those wishing to be cast as one of the von Trapp children.
Besides the lead roles of Maria and Captain von Trapp, there are eight speaking parts, a chorus of speaking, dancing and singing nuns who double over many parts, a Mother Superior, seven to 14 von Trapp children and a children’s chorus of Austrian singers and dancers.
Director Sandra Dinse will utilize two von Trapp children’s casts because there are eight shows booked; four in Weed at College of the Siskiyous and four in Yreka at the Yreka Community Theater.
Auditions for adults are Saturday, July 6. Vocals are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with script and movement from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cascade Conservatory Dance Studio in the Weed Mercantile Building, 591 Main Street in Weed.
Call backs for casting will be held on the evenings of July 8 and 9 with individual times to be announced. A read through for everyone cast will be held on July 10 from 7 to 9 p.m., at which time a full rehearsal schedule will be given to all cast members. Music rehearsals for selected cast members will begin on July 11.
The kids audition workshop for children wishing to be one of the von Trapp children will be held Monday through Wednesday, July 1, 2 and 3 at the main studio at Cascade Conservatory from 10 to 2 p.m. An audition song and dance will be taught to each child and acting lessons will be given using the script.
“We want every child to be able to give their best performance and give them confidence for the regular audition,” according to a press release from the Cascade Conservatory.
The cost of the workshop is $75, and all children will work with a vocal instructor, dance coordinator and acting teachers in small groups. They’ll also have a one-on-one lesson with a vocal teacher.
Each student will get a rehearsal CD of the song they will sing for auditions so they may practice at home.
The von Trapp children’s auditions will be held on Friday, July 5. Vocals are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with script and movement from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Children who are not cast as a von Trapp child but did participate in the kids audition workshop will have a special song and dance feature in the festival portion of the show.
Although it is not mandatory to take the workshop, preference will be given to the workshop children if all things are equal between the children auditioning.
Children from the workshop will have an opportunity to perform during the Mount Shasta Fourth of July Parade and/or the Weed Carnevale Parade in Weed.
Performance dates are August 30 and 31 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. at College of the Siskiyous. A four week break between shows will take place when show moves to the Yreka Community Theatre for performances will be held on October 3, 4 and 5 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m.
Tickets will go on sale Aug. 1 for all performances. Adults are $15 and seniors and children 12 and under $12. Special family rates will also be available.
