County's jobless rate at 5.5%
Siskiyou County’s unemployment rate decreased to 5.5 percent in August, down from 5.9 percent in July, according to information released Friday by the state’s Employment Development Department.
Of a civilian labor force of 17,750, 970 were jobless last month, the EDD reported.
Last August, the unemployment rate was about the same, at 5.6 percent.
Most notably, jobs were added in the mining and logging industries, as well as wholesale trade and local government, according to EDD statistics.
Siskiyou County is now ranked 40 out of California’s 58 counties in terms of unemployment, the EDD stated. San Mateo is ranked first, where 2.1 percent of the workforce is jobless. Imperial County is ranked last, with 22.1 percent unemployment.
Statewide, the unemployment rate dropped to 4.2 percent in August, down slightly from 5.9 percent in July. The U.S. rate went from 4 percent in July to 3.8 percent, the EDD noted.
