Dunsmuir organizations discuss COVID-19 changes

Dunsmuir organizations came together for a collaborative meeting in late June to discuss changes they’ve implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dunsmuir Elementary School has drafted reopening plans to have students back on campus with social distancing by keeping students in small groups. The staff will rotate to keep the children in the same groups. They will be providing masks for those unable to maintain a distance of 6 feet apart.

“Each student will have a washable mask for each day of the week,” said Principal Susan Keeler. “We will have two buses to limit people on each bus. It will take a whole lot of training to make all this work.”

Keeler will have copies of the plans available. The school will have funding from the Federal Cares Act to help with the extra costs.

The Dunsmuir Library is set to open to the public July 14, pending new COVID-19 activity. The library has not yet received plastic shield protections for their desktops. Because they are planning to have only six people in the library at a time, there will be a time limit for how long people can be in the library. There will be only one bathroom available due to sanitation costs.

The Dunsmuir Rotary will not hold their traditional Tinman triathlon on Labor Day weekend. They are also canceling their annual golf tournament. While it is easy to keep socially distant while playing on the course, Rotary cannot afford the tournament without the fundraising dinner that’s usually held afterward. There is no demand for the summer lunches so that program was also cancelled.

The Dunsmuir Garden is selling vegetables, herbs and flowers at the Dunsmuir Community Farmer’s Market on Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. All of the money made goes back into supplies for the garden.
