Three vehicles were involved in a traffic accident at the intersection of Highway 89 and Broadway Ave. in McCloud Saturday afternoon when the driver of a Volkswagen Tiguan pulled out in front of a pickup towing a dump trailer.

Michael John Rowland, age 30 of San Francisco, was driving a 2009 Volkswagen south on Broadway, the California Highway Patrol reported, at approximately 4:30 p.m. on June 22. Preliminary reports indicate he pulled into the intersection directly in the path of a 2011 Ford F250 driven by Michael Dan Johnson, age 54 of Vacaville.

Johnson, who was driving northbound toward Mount Shasta, took evasive action, the CHP said, and turned abruptly to the left in attempt to avoid the collision. The Volkswagen struck the right side of Johnson’s trailer.

Johnson then struck a 2000 Ford F250 which was in the left hand turn lane of southbound Highway 89 at Squaw Valley Road, driven by Douglas Arthur Bauer, age 68 of Vacaville, the CHP reported.

A passenger in Bauer’s vehicle, Joan Eileen Bauer, age 48 of Anderson was transported to Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta for treatment of major injuries.

None of the other parties, were injured, including a 31 year old passenger in Rowland’s vehicle and two men, ages 20 and 32, in Johnson’s vehicle.

All three vehicles sustained major damage in the incident.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the incident, the CHP said, and an investigation is ongoing.
