'Sleepy' big rig driver injured in I-5 spin out

California Highway Patrol reported the driver of a big rig suffered major injuries this morning, Friday, Jan. 27, when his truck and trailer spun out and tipped onto its side. The accident occurred on I-5 northbound, north of the Weed Rest Area at 2:08 a.m.

According to the report the driver, a 29 year old male from Hayward, Calif., was sleepy. Reports that he was ejected from the vehicle are under investigation.

His truck was loaded with raw plastic materials, in the form of plastic beads, which spilled onto the roadway and shoulders.

Caltrans and Black Butte Towing arrived on the scene to help with clean up of the spilled plastic and removal of the truck and trailer from the shoulder. The report stated that clean up and removal continued throughout the morning.

The CHP reminds drivers to “take breaks when fatigue sets in. Remember, it is not just for your safety, but for everyone of us on the road.”
