A Seiad Valley man died  Saturday on State Route 96 just east of Cade Mountain after his vehicle drifted off the road and tumbled down a hillside.

No one witnessed the accident, which is estimated to have taken place in the early morning hours of March 30, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday morning. Americo J. Travis, 37, was not restrained at the time of the incident and was ejected from his 1990 Toyota 4-Runner, which was unable to be seen from the roadway.

A Caltrans employee located the vehicle at approximately 2 p.m. on March 30 after noticing damage to a paddle marker, the CHP said in a press release.

It appears Travis failed to properly negotiate his vehicle on a right curve in the road, which tumbled down a steep hillside and struck several trees before it came to rest on its roof.

The CHP reminds motorists to wear seatbelts at all times.
