A Mount Shasta man was taken into custody Friday afternoon on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

Earl Dodds, age 67, is charged in connection with the death of 68 year old Mount Shasta resident Claudia Balassi, according to a press release from the Mt. Shasta Police Department. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta with a single gun shot wound in her upper torso/shoulder area and pronounced deceased at 4:15 p.m. on Nov. 9, 2012.

Dodds was arrested after the MSPD received a report of shots being fired at Chateau Shasta Trailer Park on South Old Stage Road, said Mount Shasta Police Chief Parish Cross.

Chief Cross reported that Dodds was found in possession of a handgun at the scene by bystanders and detained until officers arrived. MSPD Sgt. Joe Restine said the .44 caliber handgun was quickly secured by a bystander before law enforcement arrived.

Dodds was transported to Siskiyou County Jail.
