A body found at the foot of a steep cliff in the Applegate Creek area in northern Siskiyou County may be the subject of a homicide.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation, and authorities are treating the incident as a homicide, said Sheriff Jon Lopey in a Wednesday morning press release.

On Tuesday, November 20, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department was contacted at about 9:30 a.m. and asked to assist Jackson County Sheriff’s Department with a search and rescue mission near the Oregon/California border just outside of Hilt near Applegate.

The Siskiyou County Search and Rescue Team responded to the search site, and that afternoon, the body of an unidentified person was located, said Sheriff’s spokesperson Allison Giannini.

Patrol and detective units responded to the scene and conducted a preliminary crime scene investigation, which is still underway today, said Giannini. It is unknown if the person found is the same individual sought by the rescue teams, she added.

“This investigation is being handled as a homicide but there is still a lot of investigative work being done by our detectives,” said Lopey. He thanked the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Oregon State Police, Medford Police Department, and the search and rescue team members for their “invaluable assistance and support.”

Lopey asked anyone with information about this incident to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department at (530) 841-2900.
