Escaped inmate found in Weed, taken into custody

LePaul Gardner, who walked away from a work crew near McCloud Avenue in Mount Shasta on June 4, 2014 around 3 p.m., was taken into custody near Carrick in Weed two days later.

The California Highway Patrol reported Friday night that escaped Intermountain Conservation Crew inmate LePaul Gardner was taken into custody after being pursued by law enforcement through the woods Friday evening, June 6, just north of Carrick.

Gardner, age 27, had walked away from a work detail near McCloud Ave. in Mount Shasta June 4, 2014.

The CHP reported that he was seen in a wooded area at about 3:30 p.m. two days later near Black Butte Drive in South Weed.

"Several agencies with several assets converged on the scene and an extensive search began," the CHP report states.

After a report of a break-in at about 5:30 p.m. on Hidden Meadow Dr. in Weed, "officers picked up Gardner's tracks and pursued him for several miles through the woods," according to the report.

The CHP said he was eventually caught while hiding under thick brush just north of Carrick and taken into custody at about 7:40 p.m.
