Golden Eagle Graduate Bea Promvongsa receives her diploma from director Shelly Adams, right, Friday, May 28 in the Kenneth Ford Theater at College of the Siskiyous in Weed. Bea’s teacher, Kathryn McCotter, waits to congratulate her.

“This is an important step from the world of childhood to the world of adulthood,” teacher Dave Theno said to Golden Eagle Charter School’s 2010 high school graduates. Theno explained they have had times of trials and personal hardship and yet they are here. They reached this point because they are awesome, he said. “Being awesome is being as good as you can possibly be.”

Parents, family, and friends filled the College of the Siskiyous Kenneth Ford  Theater for the Friday night graduation.

Before receiving their diploma from Golden Eagle director Shelly Adams, each graduate was introduced by their teacher who highlighted their achievements and goals while a slideshow of childhood photos played in the background.

Each graduate had an opportunity to speak to the audience, expressing thanks for the support they have received.

The Rose Ceremony, an event unique to Golden Eagle graduations, gives graduates an opportunity to acknowledge special people by presenting them with a rose. It is a cherished moment for the giver and the receiver. The tradition continued this year as grads walked into the audience to pass out dozens of roses and hugs.

Keynote speaker Jayne Turk, a College of the Siskiyous speech instructor, gave a humorous talk about seven rules to happiness. She ended saying, “You’ve earned this moment. Be happy right now. Happiness is a choice. Make sure it’s the one you chose.”

There were musical performances by graduates Ashley Meeker, Ross Roberts, and Marc Wright.

Thai Roberts received a $500 Forest Service scholarship for academic achievement.

Cake and beverages were served during a reception following the ceremony.

Lighting and sound were done by COS’s house manager Liz Errett and Jim Fitzgeral.
