Mount Shasta’s Michael Smith, who is midway through a yearlong deployment in Afghanistan, said he was working with the Afghan National Army last week as he updated his Facebook page with this photo. Smith is one of 18 Siskiyou County National Guard soldiers in the 132nd detachment who are currently stationed at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan. On Aug. 5, Smith updated his Facebook page, writing, “After 26 hours on a bridge, no food, lots of water, smashed fingers (from a sledge hammer) sprained thumb (cause apparently I can’t stop 10,000 pounds of bridge swinging at me with one hand) rolled ankles (both), blood, sweat, 120 degree heat plus wearing all our gear... And I love it!!!”
