A benefit dinner to raise funds for the “Siskiyou County Fallen Heroes Memorial” is scheduled for May 6 in Winema Hall at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds in Yreka.

The memorial, a project being organized by a coalition of Siskiyou County veteran’s organizations, law enforcement and fire agencies, is on track to be completed by the summer of 2018, according to a press release.

Scheduled for 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., the dinner benefit will include raffle prizes, food and refreshments, and live music.

The memorial began in 2004 when Siskiyou County Supervisor Bill Hoy worked with CAL FIRE to obtain a retired firefighting air tanker (Tanker 94) and had it delivered to Weed Airport.

“The memorial is to honor individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice and have died in the line of duty,” according to a press release. “The memorial will honor law enforcement, fire and armed forces personnel who have died within the county or who were sent from Siskiyou County to perform their duties. The memorial will include two helicopters, Tanker 94, three granite tablets, a flag pole and several benches.”

It is located next to the northbound Interstate 5 Weed Rest Area at the current location of Tanker 94.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial coalition is seeking help in identifying names for the memorial wall. Anyone who can provide information is asked to contact Suzi Brady at 530-598-2622.

All funds raised from the benefit will go to support the memorial, according to the release.

Three hundred dinner tickets will be sold for $25 each, and event organizers say they hope to sell them all prior to the event. They are also selling six tables for $600 each that seat up to 8 people and include dinner and gifts.

Tickets are available at CAL FIRE in Yreka, Mt. Shasta Police Department, Yreka Chamber of Commerce, Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce, and the Siskiyou County Veterans Service Office in Yreka.
