Siskiyou Science Festival begins with Mr. Fish, a circus magician who will be performing on Monday, May 13, 7 p.m. at Yreka Community Theater and on Wednesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. Weed Community Building.

Using the theme, “Science or Magic?” Siskiyou Science Festival is putting on a week of free events. Jean Nels, Executive Director, said, “We were discussing how magical science seems sometimes. Consider this partial list of magical feats that were accomplished by science: flying, going to outer space, seeing what is invisible to the eye through microscopes and telescopes, television, cell phones, fighting disease, and many more. So, we decided to have Siskiyou Science Festival week begin with special performances by Mr. Fish from Super Scientific Circus.

For the past 20 years, John Lepiarz, also known as Mr. Fish, and his band of performers have delivered more than 4,000 performances for audiences of all ages. Lepiarz uses the skills and magic tricks he learned as a circus performer to reveal the scientific concepts behind them. “The show is fast-paced, musical, visual and funny, and it’s educational,” Mr. Fish said during a recent telephone interview.

Lepiarz said that with practice and an understanding of the principles behind the magic tricks, one is capable of doing them. The performance will include plenty of opportunities for audience participation. “Our mantra is everything we can do, you can do yourself,” Lepiarz said.

“The Science of Magic” will be presented on Monday, May 13, at 7 p.m. at Yreka Community Theater and Wednesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. at Weed Community Center. Nels said, “We invite everyone to participate in this week of free events, starting with this delightful performance with astonishing feats of magic that make learning about science fun.”

Performances, Tours, Presentations, and an All-Day Festival will occur from May 13 to 19. For more details, go to the website,
