A former Nissan dealership on Mission Street SE in Salem will soon be the home of a famed electric vehicle brand.

Location: 2755 Mission Street SE

Description: Work is underway at the site of the former Nissan dealership on Mission Street. The property will remain a car dealership but will bring in a big-name, high-tech car company that is new to Salem.

A Tesla store, delivery and service center are planned for the location, according to permits filed with the City of Salem.

The Mission Street site would be the fourth Tesla store in Oregon and the first in Salem. Portland currently has two stores and Bend has one.

The electric vehicle manufacturer reported record sales this year. USA Today reported that Tesla delivered 310,000 vehicles in the first quarter, up roughly 68% from the same period in 2021.

Tesla owners take a ride in the new Tesla 'D' model electric sedan at the Hawthorne Airport in 2014 in Hawthorne, California.

The news of the proposed plans had local Tesla fans abuzz.

Larry Etzel of Sublimity got his first Tesla, a Model Y, in June.

A stockholder in the company, he went to the April grand opening of its new “Giga Tesla” plant in Austin, Texas.

“Yes, it will make a big difference having it in Salem,” Etzel said. “They do a lot of mobile service. With everything in Portland right now, it’s a little cumbersome."

Etzel said Tesla doesn’t have a traditional dealership model. Etzel, who also has a Tesla pickup on order despite them not being in production, said customers like him order and pay for cars online and pick them up at a delivery center. The closest one right now is in Portland.

“I think it’s going to be terrific,” he said.

The company also applied for permits to install 12 electrical vehicle charging stations in the parking lot of the dealership.
