Description: Those living in the Bush's Pasture Park neighborhoods and south-central Salem will soon have a coffee shop within walking distance.

Joel and Cindy Cowley, the owners of salvage store Furbish on 1185 12th St., are opening Off Beat Coffee across the street.

Brock Bowers, with Furbish, said he and the Cowleys did a full renovation and complete overhaul of the building on 12th Street, which formerly housed a moto sports shop. He said they are designing and curating the spot to reflect the style often seen at Furbish. They are waiting on some city permits but hope to open in the next 90 days.

Patrons peruse different booths at the Night Market set up outside Furbish in Salem in May 2021.

The salvage store sells vintage and rehabbed furniture and home goods. Last year, the owners opened an outdoor night market next to the store complete with food trucks and guest vendors.

Those wanting a sneak peek of the coffee shop's offerings can visit the store's Off Beat Coffee cart on weekends. Bowers said the shop will serve cold brew espresso on tap and plans to have unique offerings like cereal milk lattes along with more standard fare.

And while they plan on also serving alcohol, Bowers said Off Beat will be more of an 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. café, not a bar.

The coffee shop will also feature vinyl records and six listening stations. The name Off Beat is a nod to the musical component and to the shop's unique offerings.

"I picked the word 'Off Beat' for our name because everything is kind of different here," he said.

Bowers said he's seen an outpouring of neighbors biking and walking to Furbish's weekend market. He hopes Off Beat will be a neighborhood and citywide destination, joining the many new and growing businesses on 12th Street which provide a bridge between downtown and Salem's brewery district.
