Description: Four years after shuttering its store downtown, the Nordstrom brand is returning to Salem.

The company announced it would be opening a 25,000-square-foot Nordstrom Rack in the old Sears store at Willamette Town Center.

The addition is the final redevelopment of the former Sears space. It is expected to open in the summer of 2023.

The development comes after years of new stores opening at the shopping center once known as Lancaster Mall.

Officials with the mall's co-owner, C.E. John Co., said the addition of Nordstrom Rack will enhance the shopping center’s already strong anchor base, which includes TJ Maxx, Best Buy, Regal Cinemas, Petco, Hobby Lobby, Home Goods, Sierra, Ulta Beauty, Footlocker, DSW, Famous Footwear, Bath & Body Works, Burlington, Red Robin and Panera Bread.

Additionally, the construction of a Dave’s Hot Chicken and Jersey Mike’s Subs will open nearby on Center Street in the next month.

Nordstrom closed its store at Salem Center Mall in 2018, with company officials citing the need to invest in markets other than Salem.

The store was demolished earlier this year and will be replaced by an apartment complex.

On Wednesday, Nordstrom officials announced the opening of the Nordstrom Rack Salem store and two new stores in Washington state.

“We look forward to opening these new Nordstrom Rack locations in Union Gap, Olympia and Salem communities, strengthening our network of stores, and introducing new customers to the Rack’s unique product offering,” said Carl Jenkins, senior vice president of Nordstrom Rack stores. "In addition to shopping the brands they love at a great price, even more customers in Washington and Oregon can take full advantage of these convenient new locations to pick up online orders and make returns.”

More businesses coming to Salem:

Nordstrom Rack is the off-price retail division of Nordstrom and offers customers up to 70% discounts on apparel, accessories, beauty, home and shoes from many of the top brands sold at Nordstrom stores as well as core services like online order pickup for Nordstrom.com and NordstromRack.com, returns and alterations at select stores. Nordstrom Rack is the largest source of new customers to Nordstrom.

C.E. John Co. officials said another major tenant announcement for Willamette Town Center is expected soon.

"Willamette Town Center has become a draw for the entire mid-Willamette Valley for shopping and dining," the mall owners said in a statement. "Adding Nordstrom Rack to our tenant mix only strengthens what we believe to be one of Oregon's most dominant shopping centers offering the county's strongest and most exciting tenants."

Construction is expected to begin next month.

Mark Osborne, vice-president of leasing with C.E. John Co., said the mall was 100% leased and would be significantly reducing the interior operations starting Jan. 1. Many of the businesses on the interior portion of the mall have since moved to the exterior facing storefronts.

With Nordstrom Rack opening, new eateries coming soon and another big national tenant on the way, it's an exciting time for the mall, he added.

Willamette Town Center plans to close an interior portion of the mall and develop more exterior-facing spaces for businesses.
