BELMONT — People will have an easier time finding out what Allegany County has to offer, county leaders say, with the launching of a new website —

“Allegany County launched a new web gateway today, designed to serve as an easy-and-attractive, online entry point to the many opportunities available to county residents, potential visitors and businesses,”?the county Comprehensive Plan Implementation Group said in an announcement Monday. “We believe the end product will prove to be a very positive first impression for visitors ...”

Economic Development Director and Industrial Development Agency Executive Director John Foels said though information about the county was already online, it is on various websites. By going to, a person can find links to those other sites. For example, in the drop-down menu for “Residents”?on the right side of the homepage, there are links to the 2-1-1 Helpline, county bus routes, Cuba Memorial Hospital and Jones Memorial Hospital, county Real Property Services and the Office for the Aging, among others. The “Visitors”?drop-down menu link takes people to the county tourism site, Foels said this new website was part the plan the Comprehensive Plan Implementation Group put together.

“Ed Eicher (of Wellsville, group chairman) and other members of that group felt they should continue to work on the first impression you have when you’re finding out about the county,”?he said. “The whole idea behind this was to find a gateway and have everything hooked to it — linked to it —?so you can have one, single source and then it just fans out from there.

Foels said the county has to market the domain name, for example, by getting it on printed materials.

“How do we make sure the domain name is out there and how do we generate traffic to the site?”?he asked.

Foels said he didn’t recall the costs to get the site going, but said it was mostly done by volunteers.

County Planner Kier Dirlam said, while highlighting the new site at Monday’s Board of Legislators meeting, there is a “Latest News" link.

“The intention is, every two or three weeks, we’ll put a new story in this,”?Dirlam said. “In general, this is supposed to be a good-news website. It’s not to create a lot of new information, but it’s creating a single way to get to it. This is going to be a fairly active website."
