Obituary: B.J. (Joe) Smith
Joe Smith passed away October 29th, 2020 from natural causes. He was born in Jenkins, Kentucky on June 24th, 1935 to Howard and Ethel Smith. He was the oldest of five children (two sisters and two brothers).
When he was 10 years old his family moved to California and settled in Montague. After graduating from Montague Grammar School and Yreka High School, he joined the U.S. Air Force. While home on leave he met his wife of 63 years, Alice Hein. They were married at the Yreka First Baptist Church on October 19, 1957. They had three children, Deb Wilson (Tod), Tammy Ramirez (Scott) and David Smith (Renee).
A er moving several times they settled down on land they purchased in the Gazelle area and started farming, raising hay and grain. He also worked 27 years in the woods falling trees. At one point he worked as a construction worker building I- 5 between Redding and Hilt. Joe was a man of many trades. His biggest concern was providing for his family.
Joe enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling and especially hunting. Thanks to his grandson, Travis, he killed his biggest archery buck this year. He also enjoyed dancing, and he and Alice were o en the last ones on the dance floor. The last few years he enjoyed listening to Western and Oldies music while riding his electric cart and enjoyed smoking a cigar.
Thanks to Mercy Hospice of Mt. Shasta, Joe was able to pass at home surrounded by family. Joe is survived by his wife, Alice, three children, eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and a sister Darlene Cadman. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gary and Rodney, and sister Ella Mae West.
There will be a Celebration of Life held at the Grenada Berean Church on Saturday, November 14 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made in his memory to Mercy Hospice Mt. Shasta. Online condolences may be made at www.girdnerfuneralchapel.com.
