Letters to the Editor: Wear a mask

Staff Writer
Siskiyou Daily News

The number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise across the country. At this writing the number has almost tripled since the end of May in Siskiyou County.

We are learning more and more every week about how the virus spreads. After much testing, a review of recent research shows wearing a mask reduces the risk of infection by between 50-80% for the wearer. Previous research has already shown wearing a mask reduces risk of spreading the virus to others, but this is now proven to be about protecting you from the virus, as well.

Many people throughout the county do wear masks whenever they go out where there are other people. However, the vast majority do not. People don’t realize that they are infectious up to 14 days before symptoms occur. Fairchild and Mt. Shasta hospitals are not equipped to handle the ICU aspects of this virus. And none of us want ourselves or others be subject to lost wages due to illness, or worse.

Can we not do this one simple thing to promote health and well-being in our county? It is a small inconvenience, of course, but would you rather wear a mask or a ventilator?
