Weed moves up in soccer seedings

Ron Borges

After a 5-0 win over the Burney Raiders, the Weed High soccer team is closing in on the two seed in the league tournament.

“The kids played hard the entire game and understood the importance of sportsmanship,” Mike Gilmore stated.

Since Burney team  has had troubles this season ,it allowed players who normally don’t see much time in the game.  Seniors Nick Gaustad and Casey Weidmann played the entire game which was important to Gilmore.

Weidmann scored her first goal of the season.

Three minutes into the game, Salvador Avila got the Cougars on the board.

Top players Jose Luquin and Omar Fernandez took a different role this game, passing the ball and setting up players. Luquin had two assist one to Lori Garcia and the other to Avila.

Lori Garcia scored twice from the right wing position,  on a header and a left foot shot into the corner of the net. These were her first goals since the season opener.

Daniel Paulin had the final score for the Cougars. Usmaro Sanchez had an assist to Garcia.

Nicolette Neel moved up to center striker from the backfield to dish out two assist, one to Weidmann. Gilmore was hoping that she would get a score on one of her eight shots.

The defense had a strong game, preventing a single shot at Roberto Sanchez in the first half and Fernandez in the second.

Ruben Ducoing led the fullbacks with a single goal, not allowing the ball to cross onto their side of the field. According to Gilmore, they did this fairly well.

Weed will host Etna on Tuesday in their final game before the league tournament. A win should guarantee them the second seed.
