On a challenging day to play golf at Lake Shastina, sophomore Jake West placed first and the Weed High School team won its first Northern Section championship on Tuesday, May 5.

As a team Weed shot 430 to finish ahead of second place Sutter (445).

Jake West shot two-under par 70, which was 8 shots ahead of the day’s second best score.

“It was a very difficult day to play,”?said Cougar coach Steve Neel. “Our kids played exceptionally well. Jake played phenomenal golf.”

Liam Hagarty shot 83 for Weed’s second best score of the day, which placed him in the top 10.

Tanner Shelton and Robert West both finished in the top 20, while Cougar Adam Anderson was a little farther back.

Weed now advances to the Section Finals, scheduled for Tuesday, May 12, at Bailey Creek GC in Lake Almanor.
