Mount Shasta High School’s girls cross country team earned five all-league spots and repeated as Shasta Cascade League champions during the Small Schools Invitational Wednesday in Cottonwood.

Mount Shasta’s boys finished second to Trinity in the SCL race and earned three all-league spots. The Bears’ top boys runner was freshman Chris Cazneaux. He became the first Mount Shasta freshman to make all-league since Austin Fritzke.

The girls team placed first overall among all the small schools with 28 points, finishing ahead of University Prep by one point. It was the first time Mount Shasta has defeated U-Prep this season.

All-leaguers for the girls team were sophomore Callie Toews, junior Lisa Shinohara, senior Kirsten Bree, freshman Janelle Jaegel and freshman Ellen Sampson.

Joining Cazneaux on the all-SCL team were juniors Matthew Buchanan and John Holst.

With 48 points, Mount Shasta’s boys team finished second among SCL schools and third overall in the race behind U-Prep (37) and Trinity (38).

More about this and the upcoming Section Championships on Nov. 12 will be published in the Nov. 11 print newspaper and E-edition.
