JV Bears looking forward to next year
Mount Shasta High School JV football coach Mike DellaBona’s team didn’t win many games on the scoreboard this year, but the young Bears were winners in the eyes of their coaching staff.
“This is a good group of kids and I’m very proud of them,” DellaBona said after the Bears’ 2009 season finale at Weaverville. “We faced challenging circumstances, but you go on. I’d take them again in a heartbeat.”
DellaBona said the highlight of the season was the team’s performance Friday night, Nov. 6 at Trinity in Weaverville.
The JV Bears lost, 36-14, “but they did not give up,” DellaBona said. “They did not embarrass themselves. They ended the season on a positive note. They did a lot of learning this season.”
Derrick McKeown rushed for 54 yards in the game and scored a touchdown; Kody Waite scored a touchdown; Marshall DellaBona rushed for 46 yards; and Michael Deleon had a fumble recovery.
On defense, McKeown had 8 solo tackles and 4 assists, Deleon had 7 solo tackles and 3 assists, and John Williams was in on 7 tackles, including 4 unassisted.
Bradley Reed had 3 solo tackles and 2 assists, Waite had 3 solo tackles and 1 assist, Matt Higer had 3 solos and 1 assist, and Marshall DellaBona had 2 solos and 3 assists.
Tyler DellaBona added a quarterback sack.
For the season Marshall DellaBona led the team with 47 solo tackles and Deleon had 45.
Coach DellaBona said seven freshmen were regular starters for the team.
“The wealth of experience they gained is huge,” he said. “These young men played more this year than their combined years (with the Knights). Our JV team will be extremely strong next year.”
The coach said the Bears started the season with 25 players and finished with 18.
“We relied on old principles,” DellaBona said. “Play smart, play hard and have fun... We’re looking forward to next year.”
