Steve Gerace

The Weed Cougars improved to 2-0 and advanced in the winners’ bracket of the Fall River tournament Thursday with a 61-42 victory over Modoc.

Tanner Shelton led the Cougars with 17 points and Robert Gonzales scored 14.

Coach Mike Carpine said the Cougars haven’t played a tough team yet, but that will change when they face Trinity in the second round of the Fall River tourney Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Also advancing in the winners’ bracket at Fall River were the host Bulldogs and Hayfork.

Carpine said Modoc has no returning starters this season and four sophomores on their varsity roster.

The Cougars, he said, have been inconsistent. “We’re not boxing out and making a lot of turnovers.”

Weed’s JV boys team lost its season opener at Butte Valley and was scheduled to play its first round game at Fall River Friday morning.

Yreka Invitational

The varsity girls teams from both Mount Shasta and Weed lost their first round games at the Yreka tournament Thursday and now have their sights set on advancing in the consolation bracket.

Mount Shasta led the host Miners most of the way Thursday night before falling, 29-28.

Weed lost to Etna and is scheduled to play Mazama at 1 p.m. Friday.

Mount Shasta will face Del Norte at 2:30 p.m.

The consolation bracket winners will play for fifth place at 1:30 on Saturday. The seventh place game is scheduled for noon on Saturday.

In the championship bracket, Etna will face Brookings at 7 p.m. and Klamath Union will play Yreka at 8:30 p.m.

Amanda Amesbury  scored 14 points to lead Mount Shasta, and Kendra Woodglass scored 8.

Mindi Chandler scored 6 for Weed, Amanda Greene 5.
