Tyler Moser avenged a loss from the previous week and won the championship in the 119 pound weight class at Modoc High School’s wrestling tournament in Alturas this past weekend.

Tyler “wrestled as good as he ever has” in his two matches at Modoc, according to his father, Cougar assistant coach Rob Moser.

Weed’s Jace Wright won his first match at Modoc, but then landed hard on the floor during his second match, bruised his elbow and was unable to continue.

He’s expected to return for this Saturday’s Bruin Challenge at Mount Shasta High School.

Also for the Cougars at Modoc, Gregg Holguin claimed his first tournament match victory and placed for the first time, earning a 7th place in the 162 pound division.

A second year Cougar team member, Holguin, a junior, won his Modoc finale over Weed teammate JD Machado, a freshman.

Machado won his first match of the season and placed eight in a field of 14.

Holguin “is showing a lot of potential,” Rob Moser said.

Tyler Moser was on his way to a victory a week earlier when his opponent from Chester made a move and pinned Tyler.

At Modoc, in the 119 pound championship match, Tyler pinned the same wrestler after building a 15-0 lead.

Tyler didn’t lose a point in his two matches at Modoc.

A fundraiser for the Weed High School wrestling team is scheduled for this Sunday night (there’s no school on Monday) at Cedar Lanes. Music and dancing will begin at 9:30 p.m. and continue until 1 a.m.
