Eagles drop state softball opener, face Cosumnes Saturday
College of the Siskiyous lost its opener Friday night in the California Community College Softball State Championship tournament to Cypress College, 14-6.
The Eagles (28-12) are scheduled to play Cosumnes River (30-15) in an elimination game today, May 15, at 3 p.m. at Bakersfield College.
Two teams from the South Region advanced in the winners’ bracket,
Cypress (40-6) and Mt. San Antonio (37-11), which defeated Cosumnes River, 12-0.
A five-time state championship winner, Cypress came from behind to defeat Siskiyous, which is playing in its fourth consecutive state tournament.
Freshman shortstop Amanda Krueger gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a three-run home run. They extended the lead to 4-0.
But then Cypress scored 14 unanswered runs, 11 of them unearned due to four Siskiyous fielding errors.
A two-run home run by Eagle sophomore Janelle Cromie was not enough to prevent the game from ending after 4 1/2 innings because of the mercy rule.
Leadoff batter Krystal Huffman was the only Eagle with more than one hit in the game. She went 2 for 3 and drove in a run.
