Descending into a tunnel of greens, River Run entrants jog down Blacksmith Hill in Dunsmuir Saturday morning. The Railroad Days event attracted 65 runners in 2- and 5-mile races. Serious contestants were spotted pouring it on, but most folks enjoyed a casual, scenic run or walk.

After a hiatus of several years, the Dunsmuir River Run returned Saturday as one of the events held during the 2011 Railroad Days weekend.

Sixty-five runners began by heading north along Dunsmuir Ave. towards Tauhindauli Park.

In the 2-mile race, 16 year old CJ Palmer from Dunsmuir was the overall winner with a time of 12:58.

The first women’s finisher in the 2-mile race was Lee Ann Paul, 52, from Yreka with a time of 16:43.

Blake Zufall of Redding was the overall winner in the 5-mile race. A sophomore at Shasta High School, Zufall covered the course in 30:23.

Dessa Eagleson of Redding missed a turn late in the 5-mile race but still managed to finish first among women.  After retracing her steps to return to the course, Eagleson added about a half mile to her total distance. Her finish time was 37:59 – more than a minute ahead of the next female competitor.

The youngest runner was 4 year old Jessa Walker of Mount Shasta who finished her first 2-mile race with a time of 26:27.

On the other end of the age spectrum, 70 year old Carolyn Ward of Redding completed the 5-mile course in 47:56. Ward recalls running in Dunsmuir’s River Run back in 1989.

Race director Dusty Miller said the turnout was much higher than anticipated and praised his volunteer crew for handling the additional load. Miller said he was pleased with the positive feedback from runners and looks forward to keeping the race as part of Railroad Days in the future.
