Mekeels lead Tigers to 6-2 win in Weed
Jake Mekeel hit a two-run first inning home run and Mason Mekeel pitched five shutout innings in the Dunsmuir Tigers’ 6-2 win at Son’s Park in Weed Tuesday.
The Tiger brothers scored two runs apiece in a game that featured twice as many runs as base hits.
It was a windy day, and the game ended with sun shining at times through dark clouds and a sprinkle of rain. The real rain held off until the game was over.
Dunsmuir scored its 6 runs on 3 hits, including an RBI single by Skylar Padula and a single by CJ Palmer.
Mason Mekeel struck out 11 and walked 2. Finishing the game in relief, Jake struck out 2, walked 1, and hit a batter.
Weed’s only hit was a double by James Brunello, who scored a run.
Jerren Walter, one of four Cougar pitchers, scored Weed’s other run after reaching base on a hit by pitch.
Seven bases on balls helped Dunsmuir’s offense, 2 each for Chase Sordahl and Mason Mekeel, and 1 each for Padula, James Adams, and Palmer.
Spencer Hall walked twice for Weed, and Tommy Chanthavisouk once. Aaron Peruzzi, Luke Hart, and James Brunello reached on errors.
Officially it was the first game the Tigers have played this season. They have two other wins on their record thanks to a pair of forfeits over Greenville.
Weed, which lost for just the third time in 10 games, used four pitchers, Walter, Carlos Sanchez, Aidan Hagarty, and Cody Pimentel.
The Cougars are scheduled to open Shasta Cascade League play with a doubleheader Friday at Etna, beginning at 2 p.m.
Dunsmuir is scheduled to play a pair against Evergreen League foe Big Valley Friday in Bieber at 2 p.m.
